# Six Values, Each One With Something It Gives Up

> HCW Crane Service works to six principles, each written as a trade rather than a compliment: accountability over anonymity, safety over speed, clarity over assumptions, preparation over improvisation, respect over convenience, and consistency over shortcuts. Each one names what is given up when the two conflict.

**TLDR:** A value is only real when it costs something. Each of these six names what gets given up, which is the part most lists leave out.

## A Value Is Only Real If It Costs Something

Most published values are compliments with no opposite. Nobody claims to be against safety or in favour of poor communication, which is why lists like that tell a customer nothing.

A value is only informative when it names what loses. These six are written as trades, and the second half of each is the useful half, because it says what gets given up on the day the two are in conflict.

- Accountability over anonymity
- Safety over speed
- Clarity over assumptions
- Preparation over improvisation
- Respect over convenience, for people, property and time
- Consistency over shortcuts

## What They Look Like on a Job

Accountability over anonymity is the owner being the operator, so there is one name attached to the outcome and nobody to escalate past. Safety over speed is stopping a lift for wind that came up after the plan was made, even with a crew already standing on a wall.

Clarity over assumptions is asking what has been trenched rather than looking at ground and deciding it is fine. Preparation over improvisation is arriving ahead of a delivery so the walk and the setup are finished before anyone is waiting.

Respect over convenience covers people, property and time in that order. Moving a patio table rather than working carefully around it. Cribbing an outrigger on a driveway that probably would have been fine. Telling a contractor at four in the afternoon that tomorrow has slipped, rather than at seven the next morning.

Consistency over shortcuts is running the same routine on the small job as on the large one, because the day a habit gets skipped is never labelled in advance as the day it mattered.

## What They Cost

These are not free, and pretending they are would undermine the point. Doing the walk, the cribbing and the briefing every time makes short jobs take longer than customers expect. Saying no to a marginal lift loses the booking to somebody who said yes.

Refusing to publish a claim that cannot be pointed at means this business looks thinner on paper than competitors who state credentials it has not established. That is a real commercial cost and it is accepted deliberately.

The exchange is that everything published here can be checked against what happens on site. A customer who reads this page and then watches the first twenty minutes of a job should recognise what they are looking at.

## Our Process

1. **Accountability and Safety.** One named person responsible for the job, and a stop that anyone can call. The lift goes down and gets sorted rather than managed once something reads wrong.
2. **Clarity and Preparation.** Ask rather than assume, and arrive early enough that the walk and setup are done before anyone is waiting on the crane.
3. **Respect for People, Property and Time.** Move what can be moved, protect what cannot, and give people bad news early enough that they can still act on it.
4. **Consistency.** The same routine on a ten minute pick as on a full day. Habits that only appear on the important jobs are not habits.

## What Is Included

- One named person accountable for every job
- Stop authority held by anyone on site
- Questions asked rather than conditions assumed
- Setup completed before your crew is waiting
- The same routine regardless of job size

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Why write values as trade-offs?

Because a value with no opposite is a compliment. Everybody claims to care about safety. What tells you something is what a business gives up when safety and the schedule pull in different directions, so that is what these six say.

### Does the routine make small jobs slow?

Longer than customers sometimes expect, yes. On a single-item residential lift the walk, the cribbing and the briefing can take more time than the lift itself. That ratio is deliberate and it is not compressed because a job looks simple.

### Why not publish credentials like other companies?

Because nothing gets published here that cannot be pointed at. Anything not stated on this site is simply something that has not been established, and inventing it would contradict the first value on the list.

### How would I know these are more than words?

Watch the start of a job. A walk with someone who knows the site, pads and cribbing under the outriggers, a marked area under the load and one named signal person. If those happen without being asked for, the list is describing something real.
