# A Booked Truss Day for Your Framing Crew

> A truss setting package is a booked crane day for a framing crew. Bundles get staged where the truck can reach them, trusses go up in the order the framers set them, and the crane holds each one while temporary bracing is fixed. Sheathing and roofing material can be staged on the same visit.

**TLDR:** One booked day for your truss set. Bundles staged, trusses up in the order you set them, and the crane holding each one while your crew braces.

## How the Day Runs

A truss day has one rhythm and it only works if the crane matches it. Trusses come off the delivery bundle in the order the framers need them, not in the order they happen to be stacked. So the first job on site is breaking the bundles out and laying them where they can be picked cleanly, girders and gable ends first if that is how the layout reads.

From there it is a loop: hook, lift, swing, hold, brace, unhook. The crane is the slow part of that loop only when the picks are out of order. Get the staging right in the first hour and the wall line goes up faster than anyone expects.

## Picking in Set Order, and Holding While You Brace

Long spans get a spreader bar. A truss picked from two points near the middle wants to fold, and the bar keeps the lift points out where the chord can take the pull. Short common trusses come up on a straightforward two point pick with tag lines on them.

The crane holds each truss on the hook while your crew fixes temporary bracing. That is not a courtesy, it is how a truss stays put until the run is tied together. The hook comes off when the bracing is on, and the operator watches the same signal person all day rather than taking calls from four different voices.

Where the radius allows, the truck stays in one position for as much of the wall line as it can cover. Every reposition costs setup time and forces a fresh look at the ground under the pads. Planning the setup spot around the layout, rather than around where the driveway happens to be, keeps that count down.

## Other Picks While the Truck Is Already Here

Once the trusses are up and braced, the truck is still set up and the boom still reaches the roof. That is the cheapest moment to stage sheathing bundles, lift a beam or a post that goes in with the roof framing, or set roofing material where the roofer wants it.

Booked on its own, that kind of pick means another visit, another setup and another slot to line up. Booked as one day, it happens after the last truss. Tell us what else is on the ground when you send the layout, and the owner who runs the crane plans it into the day.

## Wind, Ground and What You Have Ready

Winter is the building season here, which is the good news. The bad news is that wind moves a truss day more often than rain does. A truss is a big flat sail with very little weight for its size, and a gust front crossing open desert can turn a controlled pick into something nobody wants on the hook. If the wind builds, the operator calls it and the picks stop. Book the set with a spare day behind it and that is rarely a problem.

Ground under the pads is the other thing to settle early. A few inches of soil over caliche is usually fine. Backfilled utility trenches, fresh landscaping and the soft edge of a new pad are not. Show us where the trenching was dug and we will keep the outriggers off it.

## Our Process

1. **Layout and Weights Before the Day.** Send the truss layout and the delivery date. The heaviest girder and the longest span decide which truck comes. If the plan set has a beam or a heavy girder in it, say so then, so the right rigging arrives ready.
2. **Where the Truck Sits.** We look at the wall line and pick a setup spot that covers as much of it as the radius allows. Room for full outrigger spread, firm ground, and a clear swing circle. Overhead lines get measured, not eyeballed.
3. **Bundles Broken Out and Staged.** Bundles come apart and get laid out in pick order before the first truss goes up. Staging done properly here is what makes the rest of the day quick.
4. **Set, Hold, Brace, Repeat.** One signal person. Each truss goes up, gets landed on its bearing points, and stays on the hook while your crew braces it. Then the next one, and the one after that.
5. **Extra Picks and the Last Walk.** Sheathing or roofing material gets staged once the run is stable. Then a walk around the site, outriggers up, and the pads come off your slab.

## What Is Included

- An operator and a boom truck chosen for the heaviest girder and the longest reach on your layout
- Bundle breakout and staging in the order your crew intends to set
- Spreader bar rigging on long spans so a truss is lifted where the chord can take it
- The crane holding each truss in place while your crew fixes temporary bracing
- Sheathing and roofing material staged on the roof once the trusses are braced
- A wind call from the operator before conditions get past what a flat load can be held in

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Do you supply the framing crew?

No. You bring the framers and we bring the truck, the operator and the rigging. We work to your set order and take direction from your signal person.

### How long does a house set take?

It depends on truss count, span and how many times the truck has to move. A layout the truck can cover from one position goes much quicker than one needing three setups. Send the layout and we will give you a straight answer on the day count.

### What happens if the wind comes up mid set?

Picks stop and anything on the hook gets landed. A truss has a lot of surface and very little weight, so it is one of the first loads to become unmanageable. We would rather move an afternoon than fight it.

### Can you set from the street if the lot is tight?

Sometimes. Reaching farther means carrying less, and the load chart governs what is possible at that radius. Tell us how far back the far wall sits and we will work out whether it is reachable.

### Can you stage sheathing and roofing material the same day?

Yes, and that is the point of booking it as one package. The truck is already set up and reaching the roof, so the material goes up after the last truss instead of waiting on another visit.
