Crane Placement for Landscape and Hardscape Crews

2 min readUpdated July 2026

Crane setting a large landscape boulder in a desert front yard at dusk

Landscape and hardscape companies in Lake Havasu City use HCW Crane Service to place boulders, water feature basins, precast steps and oversized planters into yards that are already finished. The crane works from the street or driveway so nothing tracks across pavers, turf, drip lines or new concrete.

The Sequencing Problem Every Hardscape Crew Has

Heavy elements want to go in early, when a machine can still drive on the dirt. Design decisions want to happen late, when the client can see the space. Those two facts fight each other on every job.

A crane resolves it by removing the access question entirely. A boulder can go in after the pavers are set, after the turf is down, after the pool is finished, because it arrives through the air rather than across the ground.

That changes what you can promise a client. Adding a feature stone at the end of a job stops being a rebuild and becomes a morning.

Boulders, Basins and Things That Do Not Have a Lifting Point

A boulder has no shackle on it. Rigging natural rock is about choosing a wrap that will not slip when the shape rotates, and understanding that it will rotate the moment it leaves the ground.

Weight is also a guess until it is on the hook. Desert rock varies, and a stone that looks like a thousand pounds can be twice that. So we plan the setup with real margin rather than working from an estimate somebody made by eye.

Placement is the part clients actually judge. A feature boulder has a face, and it has to land on that face, at that angle, first time. Reversing a boulder in a finished yard is not a small job. Tag lines and a slow set are how it comes down where you drew it.

Pallets, Pool Builds and the Rest of the Load

Landscape work has more heavy material in it than most people outside the trade realise. Pallets of pavers and flagstone, bulk bags of rock, precast fire pits, shade structure frames and large planters.

When the crane is already set up for the boulders, the rest of the material can go over the wall on the same visit and land where the crew wants to work from, rather than being barrowed through a side gate one load at a time.

Pool builds are the other regular call. Boulders for a waterfall, precast coping and heavy planters around a new pool all go in from the street. The one rule is that the outriggers stay well clear of fresh pool backfill.

How the job runs

Our Process

  1. Step 1: Tell Us the Heaviest Piece

Rock, basin or precast, plus where it lands and how far that is from where a truck can park.

  2. Step 2: We Plan for More Than It Weighs

Natural stone weight is an estimate until it is hanging. The setup gets planned with margin so a heavy surprise is not a problem.

  3. Step 3: Protect the Finished Work

Outriggers on pads and cribbing, swing path checked over irrigation, lighting and new hardscape, and a clear path for the load.

  4. Step 4: Set the Face, Not Just the Stone

It comes down slowly on tag lines and lands on the face and angle you want, because turning it afterwards is not realistic.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you place a boulder after the yard is finished?

Yes, and that is usually the reason to use a crane at all. The load travels through the air, so pavers, turf, drip lines and fresh concrete never take any weight.

How do you know what a rock weighs?

We do not, exactly, and neither does anyone else until it is on the hook. So the setup is planned with margin rather than to an estimate. That is why a heavy surprise stays a curiosity instead of becoming a problem.

Can you set it at a specific angle?

Yes. Tag lines control rotation and it comes down slowly. Tell us which face is the front before we rig it, because that decides how it gets wrapped.

Can you lift pallets of pavers into the yard too?

Yes. If the truck is already set for the boulders, pallets of pavers, flagstone and bulk bags go over the wall on the same visit and land where your crew wants to work from.
