Crane Support for Remodels on Occupied Homes

2 min readUpdated July 2026

Remodeling contractors around Lake Havasu City use HCW Crane Service when there is no way to carry something in. Beams, equipment and materials go over the roof of an occupied house from the street, inside a short window, with driveways and finished surfaces protected throughout.

There Is No Way In, and People Still Live There

New construction has open walls and an empty lot. A remodel has neither. The beam that has to get into the middle of the house has a finished hallway between it and the door, and there is a family using that hallway.

So the route is over the roof, through a temporarily opened section, or through a window opening. That is a different kind of lift. It is short, precise, and everything about it happens above a house somebody is living in.

Which is why the walk on a remodel is about what is underneath, not just where the load ends up. The load path crosses a roof, and if anything goes wrong up there it goes wrong into somebody's living room.

Short Windows and Tile Roofs

Remodel lifts usually have a narrow window because the house is open while it is happening. Roof off, wall open, weather exposure running. Nobody wants that condition to last longer than the day.

That means being set up and ready before the framing or mechanical crew needs us rather than arriving when they call. Waiting for the crane with a roof open is the worst version of this job.

Tile is the other Havasu specific. Concrete tile roofs are common here and they break when a boot lands wrong, let alone a load. Where a lift has to cross a tile roof, the path and the height above it are planned deliberately rather than eyeballed.

Old Equipment Out, New Equipment In

A large share of remodel crane work is a swap. The old package unit, water heater, tank or appliance comes off, and its replacement goes on. Both from the same setup, both across the same path.

The part worth planning is where the old one lands and who is taking it. Dead equipment left in a driveway in front of an occupied house is a complaint waiting to happen, so it goes straight to a trailer or a staging spot agreed in advance.

If the replacement does not match the old footprint, the curb adapter or stand goes up on the same setup. Tell us about it before the day, so a mismatch found on the roof does not become a second day.

How the job runs

Our Process

  1. Step 1: Look at the House Before the Roof Is Open

Load path, roof type, setup position and where the old equipment or debris will land. Easier to plan intact than mid-demolition.

  2. Step 2: Time Us to the Crew, Not the Calendar

We aim to be set up before you need the lift, because a house standing open while a crane is in traffic helps nobody.

  3. Step 3: Protect and Clear

Pads under the outriggers on the driveway, exclusion zone set on a street where neighbours and residents are moving around, and the path over the roof confirmed.

  4. Step 4: Swap, Set, Close Up

Old unit out to the agreed spot, any adapter or stand lifted up, new one set, so the crew can close the opening.

Answers

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you get a beam into the middle of an existing house?

Often, through a roof opening or an opened wall section. What decides it is the beam length, the size of the opening and whether the crane can reach that spot from where it can park.

Is it safe to fly a load over a tile roof?

It is done constantly here because tile is everywhere. The load stays well above the roof and the path is planned rather than improvised. What we will not do is drag a load across at low height to save reach.

How much of the street will you need?

Enough for full outrigger spread plus a clear zone under the load. On a residential street that usually means asking neighbours to move a vehicle, which is easier the day before than that morning.

Can you take the old unit away?

We lift it out and set it where it needs to go, including onto a trailer. Agree in advance who is hauling it, because a dead unit sitting in a client's driveway is nobody's idea of a finished day.
